Days 1–5: Shillong, Cherrapunji, Root Bridge, Dawki & Mawlynnong
Days 1 through 5 follow the same detailed plan as the 7-day itinerary. Having an extra day means you can be slightly more relaxed on Days 2–4, spending more time at Cherrapunji without feeling rushed, and taking a late morning start on Day 5 for Dawki.
Day 6: Jowai & Jaintia Hills – Meghalaya's Hidden Heartland
Jowai is 65 km from Shillong (~2 hrs), the headquarters of the Jaintia Hills district. This is far less touristed than the Khasi Hills and offers a deeply authentic Meghalaya experience. Overnight in Jowai at a local guesthouse.
Jowai Highlights
- Nartiang Monoliths – 17 km from Jowai, Nartiang village contains the largest collection of monoliths in Asia — massive stone pillars erected by the Jaintia kings between the 15th and 19th centuries. Absolutely extraordinary and almost unknown outside Meghalaya. Entry: ₹20.
- Tyrshi Falls – A powerful waterfall in the middle of a rubber tree forest. A short trek leads to the base. Entry: Free.
- Syntu Ksiar – A dramatic viewpoint overlooking the confluence of the Myntdu and Minar rivers from a sheer clifftop. Entry: Free.
- Thadlaskein Lake – A small, serene lake used by the Jaintia kings for duck-hunting expeditions. Boating available. Entry: ₹20.
Day 7: Mawphlang, Laitlum Canyons & Umiam Lake
Drive back from Jowai toward Shillong, stopping at key spots along the way.
Mawphlang Sacred Grove
25 km from Shillong. A 1-hour guided walk through this 1,000-year-old protected forest. Entry: ₹50, Guide: ₹200–300. No plant material may be removed — the grove remains completely untouched by humans.
Laitlum Canyons
28 km from Shillong, these deep canyons are one of Meghalaya's most underrated viewpoints. The terrace drops dramatically into rolling green valleys. Best visited in the late afternoon for golden-hour light. Entry: Free.
Umiam Lake (Barapani)
On the way back to Shillong, stop at Umiam Lake (~17 km from Shillong). Boating, kayaking, and pedal boats available. Entry: ₹30. Great for a relaxed late evening.
Day 8: Departure to Guwahati
Checkout morning. Enjoy a final breakfast in Police Bazar. Drive to Guwahati Airport (~2.5 hrs). Book your departure transfer via Assam Seva for a stress-free ending to a remarkable trip.
Optional Alternate Day 6–7: Nongkhnum Island
If Jowai doesn't appeal to you, use Days 6–7 to visit Nongkhnum Island instead — Meghalaya's largest river island, located in West Khasi Hills (~170 km from Shillong, 4 hrs). The island sits in the Kynshi River, featuring white sandy beaches, clear water, and scenic river crossings. Overnight in a local homestay on the island for a uniquely remote experience. Best visited November–April.

Frequently Asked Questions
Jowai is the Jaintia Hills district headquarters and offers a very different experience from the heavily-touristed Khasi Hills. Its unique draws are the Nartiang Monoliths (Asia's largest collection of ancient stone pillars), Tyrshi Falls, Syntu Ksiar viewpoint, and Thadlaskein Lake. You'll encounter very few tourists here, making it ideal for authentic cultural experiences and photography.
Yes, if you can spare the extra day. 8 days removes the time pressure from the 7-day plan and adds either a Jowai day trip or a visit to Nongkhnum Island. The extra day also means you're not rushing the post-trek recovery after the Double-Decker Root Bridge climb, and you have a buffer for weather disruptions, which are common in Meghalaya.
