Day 3: Double-Decker Living Root Bridge Trek – Nongriat
This is the most physically demanding and most rewarding day of the entire trip. Start by 7 AM.
The Trek
From Tyrna village (8 km from Cherrapunji), descend approximately 3,500 steps through dense jungle to Nongriat village. The descent takes 1.5–2 hours. The Double-Decker Living Root Bridge — two bridges stacked vertically, grown over 500+ years by the Khasi people using rubber tree roots — sits at the bottom. Entry to the bridge: ₹50.
Continue 500 metres further to Rainbow Falls — a hidden cascade with a natural pool, often showing a rainbow in the mist on sunny mornings. Total round-trip distance: ~7 km. Total time: 4.5–6 hrs including stops. The climb back up takes 2–2.5 hours.
What to Bring
- Trekking shoes with grip (no sandals or flip-flops)
- At least 2 litres of water per person
- Snacks and energy bars
- Waterproof phone case
- Light rain jacket
Return to your Cherrapunji guesthouse by afternoon. Rest your legs — you've earned it.
Day 4: Recovery Day – Return to Shillong
After the hard trek, take it easy this morning. Visit any spots you missed in Cherrapunji or simply enjoy the misty views from your guesthouse terrace. Drive back to Shillong (~1.5 hrs) by noon. Afternoon at leisure: explore the Bara Bazar, visit All Saints Cathedral, or try the Shillong Cafe scene.
Day 5: Dawki & Mawlynnong – Glass River & Cleanest Village
Depart by 6:30 AM. Full details in the 4-day itinerary. With 7 days you have extra time at each spot — consider kayaking on the Umngot River (available from some operators) and spending more time in Mawlynnong's village lanes.
Day 6: Mawphlang Sacred Grove + Laitlum Canyons + David Scott Trail
Mawphlang Sacred Grove (Morning)
25 km from Shillong. The 1-hour guided walk through this ancient forest is profoundly peaceful. Entry: ₹50, Guide: ₹200–300.
Laitlum Canyons (Afternoon)
Often called Meghalaya's hidden gem, Laitlum Canyons (28 km from Shillong) offers sweeping views of deep gorges and rolling green hills. The viewpoint is accessible via a short walk. Entry: Free. Best at golden hour.
David Scott Trail (Optional)
If you're still energetic, the starting point of the historic David Scott Trail is near Mawphlang. The full 16 km trail takes 4–6 hours; even a 2–3 km section offers beautiful Khasi upland scenery and colonial stone-laid paths. A guide is essential.
Day 7: Umiam Lake + Departure to Guwahati
Checkout morning. Drive 17 km from Shillong to Umiam Lake (Barapani) — a large reservoir with boating, water sports and scenic picnic spots. Entry: ₹30. Water sports: ₹200–500 per activity. 1.5 hrs is enough.
Then drive to Guwahati (~2.5 hrs) for your afternoon or evening flight/train. Book your return transfer via Assam Seva.
